For over a year, sugar mills have reaped a rich bounty, exploiting fall in sugarcane production by hiking prices through market manipulation and inventory build-up - a time-tested mechanism to fleece consumer even before the crisis has hit home.
Sugar became 'bitter' last year even at the beginning of the sugar cycle, and consumer wondered how prices could react so sharply even when the actual fall in production was still notional.

NEW DELHI- Over 12,000 sugarcane farmers demonstrated in New Delhi on Thursday (Nov. 19) to demand higher prices for their crop.
They were protesting government announced plans to freeze sugar cane prices.
Central Delhi came to a standstill in the afternoon when the farmers, mostly from North India took to the streets demanding that sugar cane prices be allowed to rise.

Sugarcane is often subject to political debate, but it definitely has a sweeter side.
The last week saw Delhi brought to grinding halt as thousands of farmers from North India decided to protest on the city's roads to demand better prices for their sugarcane harvest.
It is a sad paradox that India is the world's largest consumer of sugar and the second-largest producer of the commodity, but farmers are not laughing all the way to the bank.

Distressed at not getting an adequate price for his produce, a debt-ridden sugarcane farmer allegedly committed suicide.
The victim burnt his fields in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district and then jumped in the fire, police said on Saturday.
Isbuddin (51), a resident of Asara village in Baghpat, about 400-km from Lucknow, took the extreme step on Friday evening.

Sugar mills in India's top producing state have accelerated cane crushing after last week's unseasonal rains and so far the state has produced higher quantity of the sweetener than last year, a government official said.
"Rains had disrupted crushing last week for almost four days, but now fields are dry and crushing is going on in full momentum," Rajendra Chavan, sugar commissioner of Maharastra, told Reuters in an interview on Friday.
